hi all after already spending a small fortune on flea treatments (dont know where the little blighteres have come from as our cats are flea free lol) i have bitten the bullet and spent ALOT of money calling in rentokil who are coming tomorrow as they are biting my three year old to death!!
anyway i have already washed all off her clothes and most of the bedding but am now wondering if there was much point as i found a flea this morning, my question is should i wait till rentoil have been and then re wash everything again (a blinkin daunting task but if it has to be done it has to be done!!)
any ideas people?? xx

have you got a tumble drier? wait until rentokill have been and bung what you can in the tumble drier on the hottest setting, the heat will dessicate them.
btw, have you tried indorex flea spray? we almost spent a fortune on exterminators when we tried this as a last resort, it really does work!

You need to hoover every day, especially round the skirting boards as that where they tend to live, lay eggs. We gave up on chemical flea treatment and just hoovered, took about 2 weeks of daily hoovering but we shifted them.

thanks for the info, i have been hoovering everyday since we spotted on including dragging the sofas and beds out etc... just praying this works!! but have just spotted a flea on my mother in laws cat so wondering if we brought them home with us ??

Oh you get Indorex from the vet, my mum swears by it. Think its over £20 a can.

I don't think a flea would sit on you long enough to travel to a different house?
bamboobutton Thu 03-Sep-09 17:24:13
i got my indorex from here
zoena Thu 03-Sep-09 18:14:10
it was only an idea about the flea travelling!! am just clueless as to where they have come from as i am vigilant with doing the cats with stuff from the vets and they always wear flea collars, thanks will take alook !

Hi. I had the council out with flea situ in May - we were infested. I waited til flea man had been then washed everything and also threw out bedding, beds, toys and toybag.
Think we were unable to control as fleas eggs were already here and conditions at the start of summer were perfect.
Seemed to do the job but still have fleas living on cats. Can't seem to kill fleas with Frontline Combo - just using it on them every few weeks to try and keep on top of the problem. At least they are not jumping on us every three seconds now..
We also have a can of R.I.P fleas which DP was using a lot after the flea man came.
Good luck!

we had them last summer and got the professionals in through the council (£45) after spending over £100 on OTC treatments.
I washed all the bedding etc, on the night before they came, and stored it out of the house (in the garage).
I also washed out all the kids toys & containers and stored in the garage.
Some of the bedding is still in the garage over a year later - the eggs can lie dormant for 2 years, and hatch when they feel vibrations - ekkkkk.
We only noticed the infestation after out dog died and the fleas started biting us - they were EVERYWHERE and it was horrible.
We also had to have the professional back a week later (council return visits were free). I wasn't told not to vacuum after the treatment until I rang to say we still had them and was told off for vacuuming .
We only saw a handful inbetween the treatments but I wasn't prepared to accept that.
Hope you are clear soon.

Just thinking about fleas causes most people to itch. Fleas are hardy little creatures and as such, hard to eliminate.
What are they?
Adult fleas are parasites, living off warm-blooded animals, different species of flea living off different animals. Cat fleas are approx. two to three mm in size, brownish in colour, and are responsible for the majority of flea infestations.
Their increase in numbers in recent years has been caused by an increase in the number of people keeping pets and by the tendency for pet owners to neglect cleaning their pet's bedding properly.
Central heating provides the necessary warmth needed for fleas to breed and fitted carpets provide relatively undisturbed environments for flea larvae to develop.
Flea bites appear as a tiny dark red spot surrounded by a reddened area which can be intensely irritating and usually persists for one or two days.
How do they live?
Flea eggs are about half a millimetre long, pearly-white in colour and are laid on the pet or in its bedding. Four to eight eggs are laid after each blood meal, a single female producing between 800-1000 eggs during her lifetime which may be as long as two years.
The eggs hatch in about one week into larvae which live in dark, humid places such as animal bedding and carpet fluff, feeding on debris and adult flea excrement. A cat's bedding may support 8000 immature and 2000 adult fleas.
After 2-3 weeks, the larvae spin cocoons and pupate and may spend winter in this state. The adult flea will then be stimulated to emerge by the vibrations set up by a passing host. Development from egg to adult is normally completed in 4 weeks but at low temperatures will take much longer.
Control:
Regular cleaning denies fleas breeding sites and contributes significantly to their control. You should remove accumulations of debris from cracks and crevices such as the cracks between skirting boards and floorboards, and the whole area thoroughly cleaned.
Can I get them treated?
Yes, treatment can also be carried out professionally by Pest Control technicians, contact us and an appointment can be made. Please note charges may apply.
Good hygiene is also vital to avoid attracting the fleas back to food sources.
